Max Martin

Max Martin has steadily developed into a dedicated competitor for the University of North Carolina wrestling program, competing at 133 pounds throughout his collegiate career.

As a true freshman in 2022–23, Martin made his debut for the Tar Heels at the Southeast Open, beginning a season in which he secured five wins while competing in four tournaments. He showed early promise with multiple victories, including two pins and a decision at the Life U Open, along with additional wins at the F&M Open and Appalachian State Open.

During his redshirt freshman campaign in 2023–24, Martin continued to gain valuable experience on the mat. He competed at 133 pounds and highlighted his season with a first-period fall at the Mountaineer Invitational. He also made his first collegiate dual start and ACC dual debut against Duke, marking an important milestone in his progression. His efforts extended beyond competition, earning recognition on the ACC Academic Honor Roll.

In the 2024–25 season, Martin remained active at 133 pounds, representing North Carolina at the Southeast Open. The following year, 2025–26, he made his lone appearance at the same event, continuing to contribute to the Tar Heels’ lineup.

A native of Chesapeake, Virginia, Martin attended Great Bridge High School, where he built an impressive prep career. A three-time Virginia High School League state placer, he finished as a state runner-up as a freshman before capturing a state title as a sophomore. He served as a three-time team captain and helped lead his team to two state championships, compiling a strong 112–22 career record.

Wrestling runs in Martin’s family. He is the son of Steve and Lori Martin, and his father, Steve, was an All-American wrestler at the University of Iowa and later served as the head coach at Old Dominion University.
